Year 2
Mrs Horsley is our Year 2 class teacher, and we are lucky to have Mrs Boja and Mr McQuillan supporting us every day in our learning. All the Year 2 team are available daily to answer any questions you may have regarding your child’s needs, please just ask.
Mrs Horsley has been teaching for over twenty years. She worked here a few years ago before leaving to work in another school and she liked it here so much that she came back! Mrs Horsley said that she enjoys working within a close community of pupil’s and staff in a supportive, caring environment where individual needs are the main priority. Mrs Horsley loves History and learning about people who lived in the past. She is the Humanities lead teacher for St. Joseph's. Mr McQuillan and Mrs Boja are both in their 2nd year working at St Joseph’s and have enjoyed supporting, encouraging and mentoring pupils across different year groups.
In Year 2 we understand that everyone can grow, learn and shine!
We always try our best, rise to a challenge and are kind and respectful towards staff and each other.
Year 2 is a busy year full of a variety of activities. We develop a strong skillset while encouraging curiosity and creativity through all areas of the curriculum. We explore famous British nurses, go on a Road Trip Across the USA, design our own healthy sandwiches, sew puppets, create animations using ICT, visit local libraries and Newcastle city centre (on the metro) and compete in Gymnastics competitions! Not to mention our after-school activities!
In Year 2 we have 2 PE lessons per week 1 is led by a Newcastle United Foundation coach! On our PE days we can come to school in our PE kit. Every other day we must remember to wear our school uniform, including shoes – Mrs Horsley you too! If you have any questions regarding uniform, please ask in the main office.
To help us with our learning at home we encourage parents to listen to us read 3 to 4 times a week and ask us questions about the text. We also read in school to develop fluency and confidence, and our reading books are changed once a week.
Maths homework is sent home weekly to help us practise the work we have been doing in school. We should be able to do this ourselves, but we may need someone to give us a (small) helping hand.
Year 2 SATS are no longer legally required and at present we do not report results to the government to be used in league tables. We do, however, assess pupils termly to support teacher assessment of pupil’s attainment and identify any gaps in your child’s learning. Your child’s progress is discussed at parent’s evenings twice a year and within a formal written report. Please ask at any time if you have any questions regarding your child’s social, emotional or academic wellbeing.
