Year 6
Hello and welcome to Year 6.
Mrs Slater and Mrs Holmes are the class teachers, each working three days a week. Mrs Slater teaches from Monday to Wednesday, while Mrs Holmes teaches from Wednesday to Friday. Mrs Wharton supports in the classroom and is with the class throughout the entire week.
Mrs Slater has been a dedicated member of the school for over 16 years, working across KS2 and especially enjoys teaching English, Science and Art. Mrs Holmes has been part of St Joseph’s since 2014, teaching in EYFS, KS1 and KS2, and loves inspiring children through Maths, DT and History. Both are passionate about teaching and feel proud to be part of the St Joseph’s family.
Mrs Slater and Mrs Holmes believe that children should feel free to be creative, curious and inspired in everything they do. They love giving pupils lots of different experiences to help them grow, learn and discover their strengths. They have high hopes for every child and truly believe that all children can succeed and flourish when they’re supported and encouraged.
Year 6 is the final year of Key Stage 2, and pupils study a broad and balanced curriculum designed to prepare them for secondary school. They follow the upper Key Stage 2 national curriculum, with children developing key skills in English, maths, science and RE, alongside a range of foundation subjects. At the beginning of the summer term, pupils take national tests (SATs) in reading, math, and grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Alongside classroom learning, children enjoy wider opportunities such as Lego League, educational visits that enrich the curriculum, and chances to take part in sports competitions with other schools, helping them build confidence and new skills. Year 6 pupils also enjoy having a Reception buddy, meeting regularly to take part in fun activities together and helping to nurture confidence, kindness, and leadership.
Pupil voice:
ES: I enjoy year 6 because we set an example to younger age groups, and we get to go on lots of fun trips. In assembly, we sit on benches, and we have our own buddies in reception. When you are in year 6, there is nothing to worry about because it’s fun!
EC: I really enjoy being in year 6 because you have buddies in Reception, and you get to play and do fun activities with them, such as making biscuits and playing games together. It’s nice seeing them grow. In assembly, we sit on the benches because we are the oldest in the school. We are role models to other year groups. We have amazing teachers and lots of friends.
JH: I enjoy year 6 because I like the responsibility and purpose of having reception buddies. I always see my buddy at lunchtime, and we get to spend time together often.
I enjoy being a role model because we are allowed to sit on benches during assembly, and it makes me feel important.
I enjoy our lessons; even if you are stuck or find something tricky, the teachers are there to help and encourage you to do your best.
