Year 4
Welcome to Miss Norman’s Year 4 class. She is delighted to welcome all pupils and their families to what promises to be an exciting and rewarding year of learning.
Miss Norman is committed to creating a supportive and purposeful environment where every child feels valued, confident, and motivated to achieve their best. She recognises the important role that parents and carers play in each child’s education and looks forward to building strong, positive partnerships throughout the year.
Working closely with the class is Mrs Whaley, who provides experienced and nurturing support to help ensure that all children feel included and well‑supported in their learning.
Miss Norman has been part of the St Joseph’s community for seven years, working across both KS1 and KS2. During this time, she has gained a wide range of teaching experience and developed a strong understanding of how children learn and grow at different stages of their primary journey.
She most enjoys being part of a caring, supportive school community where pupils are encouraged to do their best and where staff work closely together to create a positive learning environment. Miss Norman especially values the strong relationships built with pupils and families, and she feels proud to play a role in helping children develop confidence, resilience and a love of learning.
In Year 4, pupils follow an exciting and engaging curriculum designed to build confidence, independence and a deeper understanding across all subject areas. Learning is carefully structured to support progression from earlier year groups while preparing children for the challenges ahead.
Children develop their reading fluency and comprehension through high‑quality texts, while writing lessons focus on extending vocabulary, improving sentence structure and using grammar with increasing accuracy. Speaking and listening skills continue to be a key focus.
Year 4 builds secure understanding in place value, formal written methods for calculation, fractions, decimals and measurement. Multiplication facts up to 12 × 12 are a priority throughout the year, with regular practice to support fluency and recall.
Pupils explore a range of topics such as sound, electricity, states of matter and living things. Practical investigations help children develop scientific enquiry skills and a curiosity about the world around them.
Children deepen their understanding of key scripture, traditions and celebrations, while learning how faith shapes the way we live and treat others.
Through topics in history, geography, art, design technology, computing, French, music and PE, pupils enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum that encourages creativity, teamwork and critical thinking.
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment for all Year 4 pupils, designed to ensure they have secure and fluent recall of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. The check takes place online and consists of 25 questions, each with a short time limit to encourage quick, confident recall. Throughout the year, pupils practise regularly in class and through homework activities, so they feel well prepared and able to approach the check with confidence.
